Conference for NGOs and World Media at the United Nations, Wednesday, 28th May 10.00 am - 4.30pm, the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium
United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, in a foreword to "The Planetary Interest" writes: "Divisiveness can all too easily descend into violent conflict. It is incumbent on us all to resist this danger. We can, by our actions and by our example provide a resounding answer to those who say war is inevitable. The Planetary Interest is the kind of forward-looking concept we need as the world goes through a period of profound transformation. It offers practical suggestions on how we can move from goals to policies and action."
Opening a day-long conference on "The People, The United Nations and World Law", presented by the UN NGO Committee on Disarmament, the editor of The Planetary Interest, Dr. Kennedy Graham, will offer perspectives on current global development to UN media and NGOs in a conference link from the UN University in Belgium where he is Senior Fellow.
The morning session of the conference, "World Opinion: A new superpower" will be introduced by Ambassador David Malone, President of the International Peace Academy, and a panel on the "World Media and the War" featuring remarks by Tony Jenkins, President of the United Nations Correspondents' Association.
US presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinch will open the afternoon session on videoconference from Washington, D.C. discussing his bill to establish a United Nations Department of Peace.
The afternoon panel "Force without Firepower: Protecting the Peace" will include presentations by Felicity Hill from UNDP, international lawyer, Peter Weiss, Lucy Webster of Economists Allied for Arms Reduction, and Hazel Henderson, author of the book, The United Nations: Policy and Financing Alternatives.
Videoconference contributions have been invited from New Zealand Prime Minster Helen Clarke and President Nelson Mandela. The moderator will be Kevin Sanders of Oneworld Radio and the program will be videotaped for TV and broadcast world wide on Oneworld Radio and Radio for Peace
International.
